This morning when I woke up , I could not believe how freezing it was. I understand that it is winter time now here in Africa, but I wasn’t really prepared for this type of weather! last night I went to bed with 5 sweatshirts on, 2 pairs of socks, sweatpants, scarf, gloves, hat and hot water bottle, but after a night of tossing an turning I lost both gloves, my hat , scarf and one sock. There is nothing like hearing your alarm go off at 6am , switching on your head torch and watching your breath slowly leave your mouth and disappear into the air. I am not sure what I was thinking , but to make matters worse I decided to jump into the boiling hot shower which felt nice until I stepped out and turned to an icicle. Unfortunately I could not feel my fingers or toes for the rest of the day and drank about 6 cups of hot chocolate.
Dinner is amazing as usual and I am continuing to eat way too much lamb, potatoes, salad, bread and dessert. Each night I am joined right on the dot by an adult hyena who lies in the sand a few feet from me with its head on the ground just waiting to be fed. Unfortunately as cute as the hyenas can be when they beg, we are not allowed to feed them, since this would be unnatural in their way of life. Yet still this hyena comes by each night like a lap dog watching me eat licking his chops.
Later this evening as we drove out looking for elephants we pulled up to one of my favorite herds ( seba herd) and watched them eat for 30 minutes, before they moved off. I never tire of one young male with a big chunk missing from his left ear. He has one big attitutde for such a small body and I find it humorous how he tries to act all big and bad when we are around, trying to protect his herd. Some of his antics include getting down on his front two knees ( which is a serious threat display) and today he grabbed this small branch in his trunk and thrashed it around .
