This morning as we drove out of camp we saw an elephant named little voice who had not been seen in around 3 months. He was named by Dr.Kate Evans who regularly heard him make a lot of noise as a youngster. The only thing that was different about this visit was how nervous he was by our presence. We think that during his time away, he visited the nearest farm or village where the people did not give him a very nice welcome. This would perhaps explain why he took off right away when we pulled up to him from a distance and crossed the channel.
Later in the afternoon we pulled up to Nandipa , who is one of the released females from the Abu captive heard. She seems to be doing well, but we are concerned by how skinny she has become. She was followed closely by her two young male calves named Nima and Ntongeni. Nima is only one year old and spent most of the time digging a hole in the sand, which Ntogeni stuffed his face with grass.
On our way back to camp we ran into a large group of mostly female elephants and their young feeding near the road. When I heard that this was Bridgettes group, I became a bit uneasy , as this female does not like people. Perhaps she has had a bad encounter with one of the local villages or farms. It may also be possible that she came here from another country like Angola who had years of civil war and slaughtered most of their elephants. The elephants who managed to escape fled into botswana and are living here now, but very afraid of people.
Just now as I was writing this blog, a hyena walked right up to me and past me within feet! since it is very dark, it scared me to death thinnking it was a lion , but still you dont want to take your eye of a hyena that close for one second! you may lose a finger or boot
