Well, I am finally back from my safari expedition through Kruger and was blown away. I didn’t realize how big and vast Kruger was. It seemed that all of the good sightings were in the middle of the park near our school. Each of the camps we stayed at were pretty cool and each had its own charm. Sleeping in a tent wasn’t as bad as I thought, it’s just a hassle to pitch it up and take it down every day, but after a few times it becomes second nature.
One of the first days we were out driving, we dint see anything at all and were upset, bored and running late towards the gate. Just as we were flying through the park around 5pm( going faster than we should have) we ended up spotting the big five (rhino, elephant, leopard, lion, buffalo) within 10 minutes!! It was unbelievable and of course only happened because we were in a big rush and didn’t have time to stop and view. Apart from that the trip was great.
The highlight off the trip is when we drove up to a pride of lions feasting on a 2 day old giraffe carcass right next to the road, which was unbelievable both the sight and the overwhelming smell! The tourists packed around the kill and were so annoying and pushy they stupidly resorted to honking their horns to get a good spot. One of the lionesses that was feeding was pretty beat up from the kill, she was limping pretty badly and was missing an eye from the chase, but I guess it’s worth the pain to get such a large sustainable meal for the rest of the pride and cubs.Another memorable moment is when we pulled up behind an older couple to an elephant sighting. We noticed that he was walking on a small game trail that lead right to the area we were in, so we quickly put the car in reverse and backed up. We tried to wave the couple to follow us back but they were to busy trying to video tape the elephant to notice its path. The elephant quickly came onto the road and walked right in front of their car. He got so close to the car , he taped it with his trunk. The hysterical part was how the lady was filming the whole time!
The rest of the trip was great, yesterday we traveled through Graskop and tried some of the world famous Harries pancakes which were very tasty. They definitely put a whole new meaning behind a pancake, you could literally put anything you wanted to into it just like you were making an omelet. Graskop was my favorite destination by far; it was so beautiful and green. I felt like I was in Ireland and Austria at the same time, but it was fairly cold there.
We got to lookout from Gods window which was a great view and some of the people in our group decided to jump off of a huge cliff called ” The Big Swing”, which I just couldn’t bring myself to do! Now we are back at campus and trying to rest before we start a new semester. This week is rifle handling so I am pretty excited to get my hands on some weapons again!
