Elephant Trouble

Today was another early day. We headed out at 6am on our last drive for the weekend. Just as we were pulling out I noticed Bridgette driving the other car, she was having problems reversing the jeep and as she pulled out she was headed straight for the tree in front of them! The person in the tracker seat had to jump off for dear life, it was very amusing, but as I was laughing I was thinking how I would have probably ran the jeep straight into the tree, but luckily she avoided it. As we headed out we  came across a large herd of cape buffalo or” Nyari”  as the Africans call it. We quietly switched off the engine and  smoothly glided forward. The herd came together with the higher ranked males  in the front. I couldn’t believe how big they were.  They just stood there frozen with heads held high and snouts in the air trying to pick up our scent and warn us to stay away by stomping the ground, shaking their heads, and snorting. The females and their calfs stayed together in the middle of the group. After  5 minutes of sizing us up and realizing we were not  a threat, they walked away from us in disinterest. Three of the male bulls made sure to keep a close eye on us as the others wandered off in a single file line. We kept on driving when suddenly a large bull elephant came into the picture. We were about twenty feet away from it when we realized it was there and stopped the car. We thought we startled him but luckily he was more interested in feeding then charging so we sat right next to him and watched him feed. As the other jeep pulled up right behind us for a closer view we decided to continue on. It got pretty quiet after those 2 sighting, just the occasional impala, warthog and loads of  animal tracks. We decided to stop for a tea break shortly after and took some funny pictures.Nellie our teacher found a magic quarry tree and showed us how we could actually use the branch to clean our teeth. It was very amusing to see everyone standing their in complete silence brushing away with a big branch sticking out of our mouth.

It was getting quite hot at this point and we werent seeing anyting too exciting except for countless spottings of the batleur eagle which moses one of the local students was quite fed up with.  He kept making jokes about how amazing yet another sighting was and how we better hurry up and get our cameras out before it goes away. We came upon a huge herd of elephants that were were running very quickly in one direction so we decided to follow behind the two male stragglers following the herd of females for obvious reasons. One of the males felt uncomfortable with our jeep  following right behind his rear, so he decided to give us a little fright by walking right up to our jeep forcing us to move back. When the bull finally let us be we followed behind him again a little further this time and were led to a hill where we witnessed either a birth of a new baby or a funeral. As we were in awe of what might be taking place Moses shouted out that there was a large bull coming our way !!!  We didn’t hear it come up behind us because it was so quiet so we quickly moved back and allowed him to pass. He started to  mock charge  us and displayed every sign that he was not happy. Nellie told us not to move or make any sounds and if he charges we should  throw our arms up in the air to make ourselves appear larger. Luckily he did not see us as a threat and continued to the others. We headed back for the camp tummies rumbling and sat down to a nice lunch with potatoes and meat pie. After I  took a nap and studied. My first exam is tomorrow so no time to waste gotta study, later! :)
